How to Build a Quad Cortex Preset for Live Performance
A live preset has a different job from a bedroom tone. It must stay clear beside a full band, change sounds without surprises, and remain easy to operate when you are focused on the song. This workflow turns one preset into a dependable performance rig.
Start with the sounds the set actually needs
List the musical jobs before choosing gear blocks: clean, edge-of-breakup, rhythm, lead, ambient, and any song-specific texture. Most players need fewer core sounds than they expect. A small set of level-matched sounds is easier to rehearse and troubleshoot than a crowded grid of minor variations.
Choose one dependable amp-and-cab foundation first. Add a second amp only when it solves a specific problem, such as a wider clean sound or a different gain character. Every extra block consumes processing and creates another level decision.
Use scenes for complete sound changes
Scenes are ideal when one footswitch should change several things together. A lead scene might enable an overdrive and delay, increase reverb, and raise output slightly. A clean scene can bypass gain blocks and reduce ambience without requiring a tap dance.
Give each scene a short, readable name and arrange them in performance order. Keep the same roles in the same footswitch positions across presets so muscle memory carries from song to song.
- Clean: full-range foundation with controlled ambience.
- Rhythm: enough gain to feel responsive without masking vocals or keys.
- Lead: a modest level lift plus delay, not simply more distortion.
- Ambient: longer delay and reverb with low-end control.
Reserve stomp controls for optional effects
Stomp mode works best for choices that can be added to more than one scene: tremolo, chorus, a special delay, or an extra drive stage. Hybrid mode can combine scene changes and individual block control, which is useful when your base tones are scene-driven but you still want a few spontaneous options.
Avoid assigning mission-critical changes to several separate switches. If an effect must always accompany a lead sound, save it inside the lead scene.
Gain-stage before you level-match
Set the input so your hardest playing stays clean at the input stage. Then work through the chain from left to right. Match the bypassed and engaged level of each drive unless the block is intentionally a boost. This makes scene-level changes predictable and prevents several small boosts from becoming one large jump.
Compare scenes at rehearsal volume through the same output used on stage. Distortion can seem louder alone while disappearing in a dense mix. A clean reference, a rhythm reference, and a controlled lead lift are more useful than matching by waveform or bedroom loudness.
Control the frequencies that compete on stage
Leave room for bass and kick rather than carrying unnecessary sub-bass from the guitar. Keep bright ambience from becoming brittle through a PA, and listen for low-mid buildup when two amps or long reverbs are combined. Make small moves while the full band plays; soloed guitar tone is not the final target.
Run a repeatable pre-show check
- Confirm the correct input, outputs, and preset or setlist.
- Play each scene with the hardest pick attack you will use in the set.
- Check clean, rhythm, and lead levels through the venue feed or monitor path.
- Verify expression-pedal minimum and maximum values.
- Test every switch you will use and remove assignments you do not need.
- Save the final preset and keep a backup in Cortex Cloud before the show.
