Acoustic Guitar IRs for Piezo Pickups: A Practical Guide
A piezo pickup is reliable on stage, but its direct sound can emphasize the narrow attack players often call quack. An acoustic guitar body impulse response, or IR, applies a measured frequency-and-phase response that can move that direct signal toward the character of a miked instrument.
What a body IR changes
A body IR is a corrective filter captured from the relationship between a pickup signal and an acoustic reference. It can reshape the midrange, soften an exaggerated transient, and restore some of the resonant balance that a direct piezo feed does not reproduce on its own.
It does not turn one physical guitar into another, reproduce room ambience, or fix clipping and poor gain staging. The most natural results come from an IR created for the same or a closely related guitar and pickup system.
Put the IR in a simple signal chain
- Set the input level so the strongest strum does not clip.
- Apply only the high-pass filtering or corrective EQ needed before the IR.
- Load the body IR at full mix as a starting point.
- Add post-IR EQ for the room, speaker, or full band—not to recreate the body response a second time.
- Place compression and ambience where they sound natural for your playing style.
- Match output level with the IR bypassed and engaged before judging tone.
Choose the right IR length
Short files use less processing and are widely compatible with hardware. Longer files can retain more low-frequency and time-domain detail when the loader supports them. The best choice is the longest version your device can use reliably without compromising the rest of the rig.
Some hardware automatically truncates or resizes imported files. Quad Cortex, for example, accepts WAV IR uploads and resizes them to 1,024 samples according to its current manual. In that case, start with the supplied short or compatible version and compare it against the device’s converted result.
Sample rate, bit depth, and phase
Match the sample rate your loader or session expects. A higher number is not automatically better after conversion; avoiding unnecessary sample-rate conversion is the practical goal. Twenty-four-bit WAV is a common delivery format, but the loader’s documented requirements take priority.
Minimum-phase versions are generally the safest choice for standalone hardware and parallel rigs because their timing is compact. Linear-phase or reference versions can be useful in controlled studio workflows. If an IR is blended with another pickup path, listen in mono and check for comb filtering or a loss of low end.
Dial it in at performance volume
- Begin with flat EQ and compare at equal loudness.
- Reduce the IR mix only if the result feels over-filtered; do not assume 50 percent is automatically natural.
- Use a high-pass filter to leave room for bass and kick in a full arrangement.
- Make narrow cuts for feedback only after identifying the problem frequency in the actual room.
- Save separate stage and recording versions when the monitoring paths are substantially different.
Know what your loader supports
Before buying or exporting an IR, check the loader’s accepted file type, sample rate, channel format, maximum length, and import method. If the unit converts files automatically, keep the original WAV archive so you can create a fresh device-specific copy later.
